Lost Life

Anger, powerlessness, sadness, confusion, these are just few of many feelings that I have had since when I heard the terrible news that my cousin Gayves G. Mwanyina (in picture above) had passed away on January 26th 2006 in Montreal. He was brutally stabbed twice in the chest. Gayves was only 24 years, still a young man with a lot to dream about, accomplish and enjoy.

For an entire week since getting the news of his death, I kept hoping that this was just another bad dream and perhaps I will wake up to find that it nothing but a dream. Same dream kept me awake, it kept me going and hoping that police will call and say that it was a mistake, that he is still alive!

In a cold Saturday, February 3rd 2007, when I stood at the funeral home’s door to see him laying cold in his coffin, did I come to realization that I was actually not dreaming but facing hardest reality that Gayves was actually gone and never to return. I can not even try to explain the pain that passed across my entire body and soul. To this moment, I have failed to desensitize this pain.

As I stood in front of him, it felt like the dream was coming back again. All I could see is what he used to like doing to me when he was alive. I could see him coming behind me and try to scare me. The echoes of his laughter when he managed to scare me were still live. His jokes and his laughter when he celebrated any success are the memories that will never fade away soon.

It is more than sad that Gayves is no longer with us. We can not talk to him no more, laugh with him no more, cry with him no more, see him no more and above all hear his voice no more. However, if there is anything that his death has reminded me, is how fragile life is and how easy it is to loose it as well. It is therefore extremely important for me to make sure that I try as much as possible to stay on focus with my dreams and accomplish as much as I can; make sure that keep any life futility out of my way.

Gayves is survived by a son named Lemar, 3 years old.

Rest in Peace Yves

Helene
